Dr. Maya Angelou said, "Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it," and I can honestly say I like what I do. My career with migrant education started in the state of Kentucky where I was fortunate to work with a wonderful group of people who cared very much in making a difference in the lives of migratory children, the "invisible" children - children like me.

I am proud to say that my parents were migrant workers. When I was younger, my father migrated to California from Mexico where I lived with my mother. After a three-year separation, we joined my father in California where my parents worked in the orange groves, grape vineyards and date palm farms. I left California at the age of 19 and moved to Kentucky in search of something "different," not knowing my life would unexpectedly return to the migrant world.

My work as a regional recruiter in Kentucky covered over 30 counties where I recruited families inthe community and in schools, met with farm owners and crew leaders, recruited out-of-school youth, and provided services to migrant children and youth. I also became a Hotline Specialist and was responsible for answering calls and referring migratory families for appropriate services. In recent years, I have been involved with recruitment sweeps in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia, as well as Kentucky. My current work is primarily focused as a lead recruiter and trainer in Alabama and Florida.

Since joining ESCORT in 2014, I have served as an independent re-interviewer, lead recruiter and trainer, and I have presented at both state and national conferences.
