The Reading First Impact Study was a congressionally mandated evaluation of the federal initiative Reading First. This program was established to help all children read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. This interim report examines the program's impacts on students' reading comprehension and teachers' use of scientifically based reading instruction. Some key findings include:

The authors discuss ways in which to integrate math and language teaching for English language learners. They offer strategies for modifications in the curricula and in the delivery of instruction. Authors advocate that by integrating math and language teaching, innovative courses can provide experiences that bridge gaps in literacy students' math knowledge, expand their communicative competence in English, and ultimately prepare them for success in future math coursework.
